It is a diversified farm that has relied mainly on cotton and grain sorghum.
The past
decade has brought a drought, so we have diversified again by converting some acreage to drip irrigation,
where we grow watermelons.
Randy actually started the farm in 1970 with his dad, J.D. Reavis. When J.D.
came to the Rio Grande Valley in 1951, he started out in the citrus grove care
and butane business and he owned some groves up until a few years ago. When
Randy married Kathy, her agricultural background fit right into the family's
farming operation. Kathy's dad, had farmed in the Rio Grande Valley and in
Mexico.
Today Reavis Farms includes Randy and Kathy, our oldest son Wayne and his wife,
Tricia, son Jim Bob, and daughter Nancy and her husband Nick Stoner.
Wayne, who has a degree in Ag Economics and a minor in Animal Science from Texas
Tech, manages the farms crops and cattle operations. Jim Bob, since graduating
with a degree in animal science from Texas Tech is now involved with the cattle
management also. Kathy manages the office and does the book work.
Our cow herd was established in the early 1980's. The original operation
included 200 head of commercial cows of mixed Beefmaster and Red Brangus
breeding with some Pinzgauer blood, plus a purebred herd of 100 Simbrah cows.
We have built a strong maternal Simbrah base and have added the bull power of NF
Smith Sargeant, Smith Spitfire, LMC-RFI Smith Red Bullet and LMC-RFI Smith Red Ammo.
We have owned and co-owned many champions and have carefully selected genetics
that are proven, predictable and that have the championship connections.
